Ken
At 14 years of age Ken worked as a minor at Wearmouth Colliery (County Durham).
When he was 16 years old he had to leave this job because his parents moved to Darlington. He then joined the Air Training corps at Goose port and was there for about 3 years. Many of his friends were Canadian and Polish. Fire watching was one of his duties.
He remembers being on leave in Darlington and watching a plane in difficulty flying over the town centre. It was being piloted by a Canadian who was trying to avoid a populated area. Knowing he could not make it to his home base, he crash landed on the outskirts of Darlington losing his own life in the process.
There is a street in Darlington named after him - McMullen Road.
Ken stood in uniform and in his own words saluted: 'A VERY BRAVE MAN'
