I was 10 year's old on the outbreak of war. Being the youngest in my family I was either put undre the stairs or wwe all went down to our Anderson Shelter. I remember my dad digging out the shelter and putting the corrigated iron and bolts together, and putting earth on top. We could fit six in them (eight at a push, along with the neighbour and her baby). Inside the shelter were benches and cushions. During riads it was pitch black and cold. We would wake up in the middle of the night and take our blankets down to our anderson with us, until the all clear.
