Although our childhood was dominated by the war, especially as we lived near London, there were many aspects which caused great enjoyment. Bedtimes could not be strictly observed when raids were imminent. Our collections of shrapnel and other debris were much valued. Our games with themes like "Doodlebugs and Hospitals" were noisy and exciting. We also had a strong sense of patriotism. My friends and I spent many happy hours collecting acorns for the pigs or rose hips for rose hip syrup. I don't know if they were ever used for the purpose intended, but we really thought we were helping to win the war.
