Francis Louis King was 17 when war broke out and he lived in Redditch in Worcestershire. He volunteered for the Home Guard and then trained for the Gordon Highlanders. He went to North Africa and was wounded. He saw Mount Etna erupt from a boat and was captured at Anzio before being taken POW in Italy and then to Stalag 11A. He lived mainly on carrot soup and vegetable peelings. Francis left POW camp on April 1945
