-Early in 1941as the bombing of Hull intensified, it was decided that I should be evacuated to Market Deeping near Peterborough. I remember nothing of the journey or my companions, I suppose I must have been traumatized by the whole experience.Iwas billeted with a nice lady with two children, a boy and girl about my own age 8. I started at the local school and had my first experience of male teachers. They seemed to shout an awful lot, especially the Head. This I found unsettling, Park rd infant`s women teachers seemed like angels compared to this lot. I remember attending the local AFS display. This consisted of half a dozen auxilliary fire bobbies hosing a van.During a break in proceedings the young lad who I was staying with and I got in the cab and the firemen turned the hoses back on. Great fun if your`e only 8.I soon became homesick, missing my family and pals and to the bewilderment of the lady I was staying with I sent off a postcard asking to be brought home. Ma duly arrived dressed in her best Mrs Miniver style complete with fox fur. This fur which I think was a " thank you mam " from her sister Dolly fascinated me. It had glass eyes which seemed to stare at you.The quickness with which Ma arrived showed how efficient the post was in those days even in wartime. We got back to Paragon station at the end of an air raid late at night. We passed several buildings which were onfire. The AFS were now deployed for real and now and again as we made our way upto Beverley rd the weird eyes of that awful fox glinted. Strange what small boys or old men remember.
