When the war started I was aged under five. So obviously I didn't know what was really happening to Europe at this time. But along with my brother Dennis who was three,my sister Doreen who was about one and our mum, we ended up in a little village near Reading. The name of this village was Spencers Wood.
How soon we left London after war was declared on the 3rd of September 1939 I do not know. But we soon settled into the country life. To start with we lived in a small cottage. Eventually being billeted in with a lady and her daughter.
I also went to the local junior school. One of our leisure time activities, along with our mum, was collecting acorns and selling them to the local farmers for their pigs.
