After the first world war a German prisoner decided to stay in England and he bought a house in Hatley Gardens close by.
In the second world war German bombers would follow the route of the Thames to get to London and would pass over head on their way.
One night this aroused such feeling in Mr. May that his countrymen were flying overhead that he rushed out to wave to them using a torch.
In recognishion of this his friends sent him a parachute land mine and numerouse incendirary bombs that set fire to the land he owned behind his house but other than that did no damage to his property while those close to the mine suffered broken windows and some damage to their houses.
The following day he had gone and I asked my Mother where he had gone as we kids hadn't seen him for a day or so and her answer was that he had gone for a holiday on the Isle of Man, I thought he was lucky to be able to go on holidaylike that during the war.
It took a few years to understand the meaning of the remark.
