During WW2, even though I was a boy, I still remember when the Germans were sending over the V1 bombs, or as we called them 鈥淒oodle Bugs鈥.
As lads, we played football in our local park, Collingwood Road, the home of Sutton United. Both my eldest brothers, Ronnie and Dennis, played for them at one time or another. Sadly Ronnie was killed in action in the RAF in 1945.
We were having fun playing football in the park, when the sirens started up, we all looked up, to see a low flying V1 over our heads. We ran like crazy to the underground shelter only to be told on arrival it was full up by a man at the entrance. We didn鈥檛 care, we pushed him out of the way to get inside. All of a sudden there was a huge bang, the ground seemed to lift up. The bomb landed to the right of the Gander Green pub on the on Sutton bye-pass.
I still tell my grandchildren what happened on that day when we pass the area in the car. Sutton had many V1 bombs dropped on it, they were very frightening but they never stopped us from playing our football in our park.
