I lived in a village in Rutland and went to the local Church of England village school; all of us in the village went there. I had to walk nearly a mile to get there.
One of the first memories that there was a war was being fitted with a gas mask. Luckily I knew the lady who grabbed me to fit the mask on, but found afterwards, some were very upset and had to be carried out by the headmaster.
When the evacuees came from London, my mother had two sisters to stay, one older and one younger than I was, so they fitted in quite well. I cannot remember much about school, but we were shocked that they did not know that Sunday was the first day of the week. At Christmas we all received some lovely red boots with zips on them, sent from their parents in London.
A while later, my mother had to tell them they would have to go somewhere else, as my grandparents were coming to stay. They lived in Sheffield and as my grandfather was bedridden, he could not go to the shelter. My grandmother did not go either and stayed with him during the raids.
