I remember going to school with my gas mask and having to put it on. We had to sit under the desk to do lessons, in case we had an air raid.
At night we heard the German bombers following the river Severn to bomb Coventry and Birmingham. We saw Birmingham burning, lighting up the night sky after every air raid.
We slept downstairs in a room strengthened by corrugated sheets with a spade to dig out should be the house get bombed.
