Martha worked in Hunters wool shop, Northumberland Street. She was 20 years old when the war started. She met her husband in September 1939 and they were married by October, then her husband was called to fight in November, who ended up fighting at Dunkirk, and she was left, living with her large family, taking care of her disabled son. Her and her family lived in Heaton, it was a very close community where everyone knew everyone else, however she remembers that there was no home guard in her area. She remembers everyone helping each other and pulling together in times of need, she said she helped whenever she could.
