I lived at Leonards-on Sea opposite Hastings pier. We had a large oil pipe across the sea front - this was in case of invasion; it was to be set alight to keep the invaders out. The Canadians and RAF young officers were staying in the local hotel all along the front. Lord Haw Haw and the Germans knew this and the bombers came after the Marina flats and the Germans. This was often announced on the radio, so we often knew what this man said.
Sometimes there were lights in empty houses and the ARP often investigated. The houses were empty however, because the spies who had been in there had disappeared.
I was evacuated to Bedford in the Midlands. I contracted scarlet fever and was put in a fever hospital after the first week. My mother brought me back home, saying we might as well live and die together.
