I lived in Bearwood, just outside Birmingham, with my parents and started school the day after war was declared at age 4. One morning in about 1941 we arrived at school to find a big hole, the building had completely disappeared. I loved the big rocking horse which had gone. After that we went to school part time and shared another building until our school was eventually rebuilt.
My father fought in the first war so was too old for military service. He worked in a confectionary factory - I was lucky and had sweets to share with friends. He also did fire watching from the roof of the factory.
There was an American camp near the school and the one Christmas they were there they gave us a party in school. Every child was given a wooden toy one of them had made. Mine was a little wooden duck - we did not have many toys.
On VE day, when I was 10, there was a street party but I did not want to go.
