I鈥檓 from Binley, which is an old mining village, and was 4 at the time of the Coventry Blitz. My father was underground, mining, when a bomb fell. They couldn鈥檛 use the lift, and had to stay down there until it was mended. I remember everyone walking out of the city to get water from the surrounding villages, and my mother and father taking people in. My Aunt Rose鈥檚 house was bombed, and she came to live with us, and then my Aunt Pat was bombed out, so she came too. There used to be one of those iron bedsteads next door, for all the children to shelter under.
At 6, I was evacuated. I remember leaving the school on buses- with everyone crying but me. We were taken to the village hall and picked out by the locals. I was an only child, and went alone to Shelford Farm at Burton Hastings- although some children went as far as Canada, and did not have a nice time, I believe. However I was very happy, and spent two years at Burton Hastings. There were some Italian prisoners of war working at the farm too, who used to make things for me. They were very good to me.
