A couple of things I recall whilst there-it became evident that when hostilities finally ceased a lot of our vehicles would be sold off to the locals rather than returning them all to the U.K with the following incidents: An American solider would drive his jeep into the garage in an isolated village and proceed to "sell" the vehicle to the garage owner. He would then depart. Some hour or so later however, the same man would return to the garage hand-cuffed to a "snowball" (Yankee Army Policeman). The garage owner would be accused of having bought a military vehicle without authority and made to produce the vehicle, which the Yanks then repossessed — leaving the man without the vehicle and of course without the return of the money he had paid the soldier. This would then be repeated in the next village.
