Late July 1940 — the house was taken over by the army to be used as a base. Officers from Dunkirk resided with us for two years. We soon became accustomed to the soldiers coming in and out of our home and as well as the new patterns that came with living during the war. It became apparent with time that aircraft that flew low over the house at 9am was headed to Berlin, and those flying later in the afternoon were headed towards Hamburg.
Looking back it is amazing to think that the enemy aircraft never attacked our village and other surrounding areas. We later learnt that this had a lot to do with the size of the houses, and the desire for takeover by the enemy. When the lists came out at the end of war we discovered that our home had been favoured by Himmler.
