Three months before my wedding took place in September 1944, I was living with my sister Doris and her husband Sydney and their young daughter Pauline, at Longford Close, Hampton Hill, Middlesex.
I returned home from work on 19th June 1944 to find the police at the end of the road. "You can't go down there" they said. My response was "But I must - I live there". They let me through and to my horror I found that a doodlebug had landed in my sister's garden. The roof of the house had fallen in but luckily the family had heard the weapon approaching and had taken refuge in their shelter, which was in the dining room.
Unfortunately, everything I had been able to save towards my wedding, china, etc, was smashed to smithereens but we were just so pleased to have escaped without injuries or loss of life.
