The following story appears courtesy of and with thanks to Will Seaton Arnett, 1st Lt. USAAF and John S. Green.

Today was the day, first I took my first ship on a mission with Choster Ninney as my co-pilot. We call it soloing. Second, when we landed at 15:30 the Major met us at the plane and told us to dress in full for decorations. So without eating since breakfast, we had to stand at attention for an hour while the awards were being presented.

I received the Air Medal and two oak leaf clusters.
