I lived in North London during the blitz. My father did firewatching and mother looked after the three children. When the siren soudned, which was just behind the house, it was extremely loud.

We would have to shelter under the kitchen table, and sometimes we went to the public shelter or down into the cellar.

As a child, it was very frightening. We had no windows in the shelters, sometimes it was very hard to breathe and the children were put into bunks.

I was evacuated for a short time with my mother to Hitching. Although I had to be moved due to a doodle-bug crashing into the field outside the house.

Mum would lie over the three children to protect them from the blast.
