It was 3rd of September 1939, I was 7, and it was the day Hyde Wakes. We left there on a coach for one week holiday, we arrived in Blackpool midday. I just remember getting off the coach, we asked the way, and we turned round, and someone said, 鈥淒o you know war has been declared?鈥
So, they said, 鈥淵ou have to go back to the coach station and see if you could get back home鈥, so this was sad holiday.
We were bombed in our street, this particular night (it was 1942). It was Prize Giving day at Sunday school, and we sat looking at the boat. All of a sudden there was this bang which felt as though the walls were coming down. It was across the road from our house. Our house was badly damaged. No window, no door, and the school was badly damaged as well. But we had to go to school, and they found us another building. We were able to stay in the house, it was boarded up.
On VE day we went down at night to the Hyde Town Hall, and they put a concert on at night. It was very crowded.
