This story was submitted to the People's War site by CSV/´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Nottingham on behalf of Mrs Blanche Spencer with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

During the war we would take each other home, we lived near each other and would walk halfway each. One night the sirens didn’t go off or anything but suddenly the guns started up and shrapnel was coming down all around us. I’ve never run so fast in my life — before or since. We were so scared, we thought we’d had it that night but we got home safely.
