When the war started in September 1939 I was just leaving school as i was 14 on the 26th December 1939.
In january 1940 I was just 14 years old and i joined the post office as a telegram boy. As the war was on i had th ejob of delivering telegrams round to mums and dads and wives to say that their son , daughter or husband was either dead, injured or missing. For a young boy this was not the best of jobs.
As i cycled round the roads bombs were falling, so i had to jump of my bike and lay flat on the ground. I alwasy had to carry my gas mask with me and me identity card.
I did this till October 1943 when i was called up to work in the coal mines. Ernest Bevin the Minister of Labour created the Bevin Boys. This was done by the last digit on your identity card either nought or nine.
I spent over two years in Clara Vale mine in Durham. We lodged in miners houses. 大象传媒ing shifts were through teh night or day.
The mine was very deep under ground and the coal face was along way in about 3 mile. The job i had was to work a machine which pulled the coal off the coal face into tubs.
After 2 years 68 days i was realeased on health grounds which was at the end of December 1945.
