Was back in nineteen forty one, that my Dad went to sea.
Not long, was I,from on his knee.
He said be good and dinna fret,
You're the man o' the house, you know now pet.

So proud was I, of my sailor dad
I was, as only an eight year old lad

But now as the years have flown away
and I look back at that forties day
so many were drowned on those convoys we learn.
I realise how lucky we were he returned
