I'd have been twenty I think. I'd had four years apprentice as a carpenter. I was living in Cinque Ports Avenue in Hythe with my Mum, stepfather who was in the airforce and two brothers. I was working over Folkestone.

I was on my way to work on my bicycle and they had a raid up Lydd Airport. The planes were coming back from there. I heard machine gun bullets from the plane. I jumped off my bike and hid behind a wall. Fortunately it were down the road running parrallel with the road I was in. I was in East Street (end of Possett Road) and the bullets went down Meal Road.

I was relieved!
