I was born in April 1939 in Edinburgh. My father was a Doctor in Nigeria. Because of the war Mother and I didn鈥檛 get back to Nigeria until May 1940. Six weeks later mother died of yellow fever so thought it best to get me back to the UK.
So my Aunt who was also a Doctor and working in nearby Gold coast sort of arranged a working passage to get back to the UK. We were on the cargo ship, the Mary Kingsley, in convoy, zig zagging across the Atlantic. The convoy was torpedoed and my Aunt really had to work her passage! I was looked after by Merchant Navy seamen. They even knitted me a toy lion!
At the Thanksgiving Service on arrival at Liverpool, then at the age of 14/15 months, I had learnt the Ziegheil salute and unrepeatable words, which I voiced during the Thanksgiving Service in Liverpool so I have a depth of gratitude to the Merchant Navy Seamen.
