Told to Bruce Funnell by Pauline Philpots.

During the war I was only about three but I can still remember wearing a red siren suit nad a Mickey Mouse Gas mask. When my mother first put the suit on me the skin in my neck got trapped! I created something rotten about this and whenever the sirens went off I was not so scared of the bombs as having to put the red siren suit on!

The air raid shelter was in a corn field just behind the house and one of the items we had to take with us when we went to the shelter was a couple of tins, full of buttons.

When the air raid was over we collecred our belongings, and the tins of buttons, and went back home. The tins where then thrown into the house, scaring all the mice back into their homes.

There was a plaster ornament on the sideboard and every time we got back it seemed to have been nibbled a little bit more!
