It was 1943, I joined the RAF and got friendly with a girl from Northern Ireland, Betsy McCartney. We went to London and I wanted to visit the Houses of Parliament. A policeman said no addmitance to the public in war-time. A highly decorated RAF officer came along and offered to take us in - we had a good look around, I remember it was absolutley gorgeous. The RAF chap couldn't take us into the House of Commons as he was a lord !
So he went off and came back with a very dashing Army Officer to take us, he introduced the gorgeous young man to us as Major Gwillyn Lloyd George ! We went through to the strangers gallery and the debate was about free milk in schools - little did I know that I'd spend 20 years of my life later working in school meals !
When we left, we asked the policeman who the RAF Officer was - it was Lord Londonderry.
We certainly fell on our feet that day.
When we got back to our Gloucester base no-one believed our story - well...it was a bit of a fairytale!
