We sat and listened to a group of elderly people and they told us their own interesting tales on their accounts of the war.
There was a man called Mr Walter Taylor who was 80 years old and he served in the D'Day landings. He join the war effort when he was 20 and he told us that he landed on Gold beach. He told us about when was in a tank that got fired at and blown up! When it happened all he heard was a hissing noise and a big BANG, it all went up in flames. He said that he was the only person who survived; he got away with minor burns and the loss of all of his hair. He only survived because of the advice his sergeant, who told him never to lock the door because it's harder to unlock it than it is to lock it. So he never locked his door and he got out of the tank and his co-driver wasn't so lucky! Mr Taylor told us that he would never want to miss it even though it was so horrific! I didn't really understand that!
We also talked to 4 elderly women who were at home in the home garden and doing their bit for the war effort. One women at the start of the war was only 4 years old and she told us how scared she was. She told us that she didn't understand why she had to go down to the cellar to escape from the bombs because she thought she might as well stay in bed, rather than having the house collapsing on her head!
She also told us about the rationing and how much they were allowed to have. We even looked at the rationing book that she used and what she could buy.
They told us that tunnels were built in Dean hill to hide bombs, guns, grenades and ammunition. They told us how un-informed they were about the war. One women said that she only found out where her Dad was killed 2 years ago, she is now 90 years old and her Dad died when she was 30 years old.
