Mary Spent most of her time looking after her 4 children while her husband was part of the RASC, a driver who provided medical supplies in Malta and Italy.

Before her husband went she was pregnant with her fourth child, he never saw her until he returned 5 years later when she had started school.

Within this time Mary had many Land Girls living with her, about two at a time. They would go out about 8 in the morning, and return for their meals throughout the day.

Mary lived in and 3 bedroom house with her 4 children and land girls. She always made sure there was enough food to go round, even though sometimes Mary would go without.

Mary spent lots of time cooking and washing, she said the land girls were not much help at home and was glad of the rest when they returned home, after about a 2 year stay.

She remembers using a big black piece of material to cover the large window of the house and recalls playing games with the children to keep them occupied.

Mary's house stood on its own surrounded by fields. Her rations were delivered by a Mr Jones in his van as Mary was unable to travel to the nearest village shops. Sometimes Mr Jones would give Mary extra food!!

Now Mary still lives in Clutton and tells both her grandchildren and great grandchildren her stories of the war.
