During the war I was 14 years of age.
My mum chose the army for me. I went to work in the Ammunition Department at Swynnerton. I had to get up really early every morning so that my dad could take me and a friend to the station to catch the train. We did shift work.
Dancing was the big entertainment in those days and that was where I met my husband. He was Polish. During bombing we had to go down to the air raid shelters in Newcastle. These were at the Lancaster Buildings and the Savoy Picture House.
My husband was 14 years of age when he was taken from his village school in Poland to go and work in a German labour camp. He then went to Italy then to England. Afterwards, he went to find his family helped by the Red Cross. They were still in Poland but had moved from the family home to near the German border.
