George was based in York St. with the ARP(Air Raid Precaution) when the bombers hit Belfast April 1941. According to George, 8 people had died a few weeks earlier on what must have been a test flight but when the 300 aircraft hit that night around 1110 perished.
George was at a dance when they struck. Belfast was wide open and somewhat complacent that the Germans would 'nt dare fly over England and attack them.
In the aftermath he and his friend David combed the streets and came across a fire in a house on Hannah St.
They rushed upstairs and David burned his hand removing an incendiary device from a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms. Then they both lifted the burning wardrobe and launched it out of the window too.
The woman who owned the house was livid and failed to understand what possessed them to throw her good wardrobe away!Could'nt they at least have tried to salvage her valuable piece of furniture?
She was furious.
Georges wife of 56 years, Annie, remains in contact with her daughter and says to this day they remember the burning wardrobe and still laugh about it.
