VE party in Massey Road, Gloucester, May 1945 - Josephine is on far left of picture in blazer, her brother is the glum-looking small boy in front row (he had toothache that day) and their mother is making the V-for Victory sign - wrong way round!
On VE Day there was a street party in Massey Road, Gloucester. All the children went to it and the local bakery made cakes for it.
Looking at the photograph of the day I seem to remember there was made a dummy of Hitler, like a guy for Guy Fawkes night, but instead of burning him we strung him up.
My mother鈥檚 in the back row doing V for Victory but unfortunately she got her fingers the wrong way round.
Massey Road was bombed during the war and and between four and six houses destroyed and there was this great big crater in the road. It was all fenced off but some of the kids used to go in and play. The area got hit quite a bit because the bombers
came over aiming for the railway at Chequers Bridge.
Hatherley Road, Massey Road and Marlborough Road were all next to each other and they all had street parties. I can't remember much about what we ate or what we did but I can remember how everyone was happy, except for my little brother. He's the one in the front of the photograph who's not looking at all happy - I remember he had terrible toothache that day!
I still live in Massey Road (said Josephine in 2005), in the house where I was born and a lot of the other people in the picture still live in the same area too.
