In 1943, I was 8 years old and living at 153 West Street East Grinstead, with the Evershed family. On this Friday afternoon, I was at home, when I heard a very loud explosion. After the bombing, you were allowed to view the damage at the back of the cinema - there was an enormous large hole.I also remember walking to school up Institute Walk and looking at a very large iron girder which had spanned the outer walls of the Whitehall Cinema.

The Queen Mother (then Queen Elizabeth), visited East Grinstead after the bombing to convey her sympathy at the large loss of civilian life.
