My family were evacuated from Harlesden in London. In 1943 when i was 4 we went to live with my Aunt Queenie Barwell. My dad was in the R.A.M.C and was serving in Italy. We went to the local village school in Flamstead near St. Albans.
In school we were taught to recognise enemy planes as well as ours.
Each lesson we had, we were pulling squares of material to pieces to make wadding for bullets.
One day we watched a dog fight above us and the German plane was shot down in a field. We ran as fast as we could to see the plane, but the police and homeguards got there first. The German pilot survived and was taken away.
We learned how to gather fruit, nuts and herbs wherever we could to help out at home.
We went back to London in 1945, as mum couldn't take to the country life.
Dad returned home in 1946.
