Shown is a shot down Me 109F with grinning and curious friends of Sergeant Allan Green clambering over it.
This picture was taken by Sgt Green towards the end of the campaign in North Africa. From the heavy bullet and cannon strikes, and the bent airscrew, it's obvious that this Messerschmitt Me109F has been shot down by British aircraft.
After a tough and costly campaign the RAF's desert airforce finally had the better of the Luftwaffe. The influx of better aircraft like the Spitfire Mk IX made a big difference in the fight against German fighters.
This was one of several pictures of wrecked German aircraft taken by Alan in the desert.
It should be borne in mind, however, that the air war in the desert was won at great cost to the RAF. One German Ace Jocheim Marseilles was responsible for personally shooting down over 80 British aircraft during the North African campaign.
