My Dad in his Navy uniform

He went to New York for Merchant Ships to be loaded for the return journey to Britain. So why this happened the had shore leave. He thought New York was wonderful, lights everywhere, plenty of chocolate, tobacco, drink, enormous shopping stores and numerous theatres. He went to the famous Celebrity Canteen and his one moment of fame was when JANE RUSSEL the film star asked him to dance.

On the way back to Britain the ship broke down, the engine had to be repaired so the convoy left them behind whilst repairs were done. It was a very dangerous time as German U-boats were in the area and had already targetted an oil tanker and several other ships - the horrors of which he refused to describe. However, after very quietly repairing the engine they steamed ahead to try to catch the convoy but instead of white smoke the ship was billowing black which made them quite a target. They did manage to get home safely.
