Peter was born in 1938. He remembers an Anderson shelter in his back garden as well as a shelter in the corner of the sitting room, which was made of an iron and wire mesh support and was as big as a double bed.
In 1942/43 he recalls watching the vapour trains of the massive RAF Thousand Bombers Raids on Germany and looking at the gaps in the formations as the bombers returned.
At school, the children practiced air raid drills. The ‘Gas Van’ from the local Civil defence team would erect a Gas Tent and gas masks were tested!
Chertsey was a small town and Peter remembers queuing for rationed bread, milk etc. He went with his mother to the International Store and Woolworths with ration books and clothing coupons in hand. Purchases were paid for at kiosks.
