As a child I would sit under the stairs with my Mother and Grandmother when the air raid warning went, and bang on the wall to our Neighbours (a Mr. And Mrs North) and they would bang back. Following this we had our Morrison Shelter, (a table structure which was in the back room, in which my brother David and I would sleep in, and when the warning went, my Mother would climb in with us. I was told that my Grandmother had refused to use it, but at the first siren she hurriedly joined us. My Grandfather was an Air Raid Warden and my father was away in the Air force, where he worked on Radar. During part of his service he worked in Radar on Beachy Head. At this time I can remember having a Mickey Mouse gas mask.
We also lived in Broadstairs where I remember my Mother taking me on the front, where the beach was covered in barbed wire; and on one occasion there was some target practice going on at a Target Plane (I think this was red). It was so scary and we were warned that there would be a loud noise. I so well remember my Mother covering up my ears, so that I wouldn鈥檛 be frightened of the noise. I still don鈥檛 like the noise of a balloon bursting. .
