In April 1939 I was in a 19-20 age group and had to register for six months service or join the services. I was put in the army.
I was in the infantry about the time Hitler had the Doodlebugs going over London. I had been transferred to the RAOC.
In our unit one of the boys was always anxious to get home on week-ends to his family in Stratford. Me and a mate would cover for him if duties turned up for him while he was absent.
One week-end we went to meet his wife and young son.
We went by train not having much cash first job was to dodge the ticket man on the train.
We met his wife and son and the first night I slept on the deck in the front room. I heard the doodlebugs and told the young son not to worry, it鈥檚 when the noise stops the trouble starts.
Next morning Frank, his father, was sticking the tiles back on the fireplace with condensed milk.
The folks in that area had a tough time and really were in danger without anywhere to hide.
I will remember that and none of those youngsters had no medals.
We served from age 19-26 and started at two bob a day. I鈥檓 now 86 and thankful to have come home safely with only a little damage.
