A local greengrocer, Mr. Bradbrook, would occasionally get a consignment of bananas in (this was the start of the war) and the word spread - 'Bradbooks have got bananas'. Suddenly there would be a very,very long queue on Anlaby Road near Wheeler Street gates, near to where the train level crossing used to be. But each person in the queue would be allowed ONLY ONE BANANA!
