Towards the end of the war I was at a Scout camp near Scarborough. We had saved our ration coupons for meat and at the end of camp acquired a 12 lb tin of corned beef so that we could make sandwiches for the return home.

It took five of us quite a time to open the tin with our Scout clasp knives but in the end we struggled to get the meat out on to a small table. We were all set for making sandwiches when a dog from the nearby farm rushed in and grabbed the meat. Were we mad ! Even a chase round the field failed to recover our packed lunch ! TONY ALLEN
