I was 19 at the time. 90 girls turned up for the Pre-Service Unit - the Girls Training Corps (GTC). There was also the Girls Nautical Training Corps, the GNTC, which trained girls to get them ready for the Navy. The male commanding officer came to visit me in 1949 after I'd had a child. I still see some of the girls I trained and their children and grandchildren. At Scunthorpe I was in charge of training fifty girls per week. We held marching demonstrations for Soldiers, Sailors & Airmen, and raised funds for soldiers etc returning from the war. After the war, I worked in the voluntary sector, and stayed in youth services for years.
