In 1939 at the outbreak of war I was still at school. But in 1942, at the age of eighteen-and-a-half, the call-up came. I volunteered and was accepted for the Indian Army.

Almost at once I found myself on a troop ship bound for India. On arrival there, along with others, I went to the OTS at Bangalore to be trained to become an officer. I was commissioned into the Royal Indian Army Service Corps at age 19. I was then sent for further training in supply work at Kakul in Northern India. After that I was sent to serve in the area of Assam and on the Indo-Burman border.

´óÏó´«Ã½ was not dangerous, but still quite demanding. I travelled the length and breadth of India both on duty and on leave. I saw some interesting places all at Government expense. At the end of the war I was repatriated to the UK and was discharged from the forces after four-and-a-half years’ service with the honorary rank of Captain.
