It was towards the end of the war, and me and my mate Billy were about 8 years old and would like to play at the mental intitution. The institution was right next to a parade ground for the Home guard and ARP, who would parade on sundays.
One Sunday, we found a bomb sticking in the ground with the tail fins and a ring around the tail fins. It was an incendiary bomb. We pulled it out and pulled it up onto the shelf, and me and Billy were sitting either side across it.
When the the home guard spotted us they ran for cover! All of them disappeared behind whatever they could. after a while the Sergeant popped his head up, and shouted to me, "Put it down!".
"It's mine", I said, "you're not stealing it from me"
Eventually a policemen turned up on his pushbike. He asked me againg to put it down and this time I did. As soon as I had he grabbed me by the ear and pulled me away, giving my arse a kick at the same time!
Because of that incident, I got a reputation as a bit of a daredevil, as well as getting the nickname "Bomber".
