On leave from the Army, went to London for a weekend break. The next morning we were given for breakfast; one thin round slice of spam on a big white plate. My husband looked at me; I looked at him, shook our heads and said no. Asked the workers if there was anything else- she said no. We then said could we have what those people on the next table were having and she said no. You have to stay for three days before you qualify for fish. My husband then blew his top, he said imagine we have been here for three days and he let us have the fish- we got the fish, a herring.
In the war travelling through France fighting with the troops, his lorry was shelled by a German plane. The bullets went through the middle of the lorry and even went between the driver and my husband who was by the gear box as they travelled. Needless to say the lorry landed in a ditch they both jumped out and took cover underneath the lorry. Never, he told me had he been so close to death.
