Once we knew the date of VE day, things livened up. I took a train into London, all sixteen years of me, and made my way through to where the crowds were and then walked on down The Mall to Buckingham Palace. Here, people were calling for the King and Queen to put in an appearance on the balcony and also doing a lot of singing and cheering.
I later found out that I was in distinguished company as the King had let his princess daughters out to join the merry throng outside the palace.
Getting back home was a bit of a problem as most roads to main line railway stations proved to be crowded and buses were few and far between. I can鈥檛 remember if I even managed to get any food but I did know that I had been part of the main celebration.
