On the night of Dec.12th. 1940 the Germans launched a massive air raid on Sheffield. My Dad was working at English Steel factory on night shift. I was only 7 years old & my brother was 6. When it became obvious that the attack would be sustained, my Dad was given the option of using the factory shelter, or making his way home. He decided to walk home to us, even though it was 7 or 8 miles through the worst of the bombing. He made it, by avoiding the main roads. It must have been hell walking by all the fires. When it was all over, he returned to work for another shift.
