My grandpa was called Bernard Smith but was known as Burt. I don't know why. All that I do know is that he left Birkenhead and joined the army. My father is now dead and i can't remember exactly but I think that he joined the army in Dorset or Cornwall. Anyway, I understand that he fought in North Africa and then Monte Casino. I understand that he liberated Italy! I also understand that he was at Dunkirk. My father told me that as he was getting into a boat the man in front was killed. My grandpa was injured and had shrapnel in his leg until he died. He said that he could always tell if it was going to rain. I miss my father very much and wish that I had known more about my grandpa. Does anyone remember him? He had very black hair, a scouse accent, very dark eyes, and a love of bottled Guinness!
