My sister was born in 1944 and, as a nine year old, I felt more than ready to take control of her safety. I was therefore always ready to pick her up and dash to the cupboard under the stairs, which I'd been told was the safest place in the house.
My father worked at Smiths Industries in Cricklewood making aircraft instruments. At the height of the "doodle bug" attacks,he had us all sleeping under the dining room table. Just before this, my mother in the bedroom upstairs, had witnessed the unnerving sight of a doodle bug passing the window and then turning round and heading back again. This prompted the move downstairs.
Incredibly, the only damage our house sustained was the loss of the downstair's windows and the odd fall of plaster from the ceiling.
We also got through the war without losing one family member.
We were very lucky.
