I was only 14 at the outbreak of the war, so was taken by my dad to watch the dances, but not to take part.

When I was old enough, I was allowed to the Ack Ack Battery on Nacton Road to take part in the dances there.

I used to cycle there and back, which was no mean feat during the blackout. We had specially hooded headlights that only threw light sparingly onto the road ahead.

Luckily, I can only ever remember that there were moonlight nights at the times I was on the road, so I was safe.
